  1. A severe snow storm hit the southern states forcing Lousiana, Alabama and Georgia to declare a state of emergency. Even though it would be a normal amount for us in Erie, the south isn't prepared to handle such conditions. The snow, freezing rain and frigid temperatures have caused power outages, dangerous road conditions and numerous cancellations of schools and flights. Winter storm warnings are still in effect for parts of Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas.

I think this weather is definitely bizarre, especially for the south. Everyone has their own theories as to why this abnormal weather is occuring more frequently. Is this change in weather temporary or are we headed toward an extreme climate change?

  2. The Erie Times News included an article regarding the environmental effects of Marcellus Shale. Mainly, the water system has become contaminated because companies are dumping the waste into large rivers in Pennsylvania. It seems Pennsylvania lawmakers did not enact a law requiring the safe disposal of the contaminated water resulting from frackling. In my opinion, since environmental awareness has been in the spotlight the last several years, all corporations should act responsibly without government requirements, and shame on the PA lawmakers for not acting in a timely manner. Other states had the laws needed to protect their citizens from frackwater. I wonder where our leaders were when the frackling began in PA.

  3. the Obama administration announced plans to build a network of high-speed passenger rail lines across the country. The administration said that the rail lines have been designed to cut down on automobile traffic, reduce the United States’ dependence on foreign oil, and be environmentally friendly.
The plan includes ten regions of the country that will receive government funding to create a rail network that would connect cities within those regions. The regions chosen are the parts of the country that are most densely populated. They include New England, the southeast, the Midwest, centering on Chicago, the Pacific Northwest, and southern California, among others.

  4. During class we discussed how the Erie economy has been effected. Although the Company I work for is based out Ohio, they supply to most of the East Coast. We have had to drastically cut cost and food waste, to try and recover the loss we take on our accounts we serve. Due to the layoffs from the company we serve last year and their current changes means an even greater lose to the company I work for. The Company I serve lunch to has been moving a large portion of there company from Erie to North Carolina. When there final transfer is done it will Impact the Erie community letting go of nearly another 200 workers. This can also effect my job status as the loss of these employees will put more finacial strain on my sales. Which we can assume will lead myself to the unemployment office.

  5. A major winter storm in the Northeast has caused a travel nightmare for thousands.

Airlines have canceled hundreds of flights and Amtrak has canceled train service between New York and Boston as snow blankets the Northeast.

American, Delta and other airlines had already canceled hundreds of flights by Wednesday morning, and travel in and out of New York and Boston was very limited.

American expects to resume flights at New York City-area airports by Wednesday afternoon, but won't start flying again in Boston until Wednesday night.

The winter storm that shut down much of the South churned up the coast Wednesday, dumping snow across the Northeast and saving its most brutal punch for New England, where hundreds of cars spun out and schools and businesses shut down.

  6. Winter driving! Well with all the talk about the weather and the winter storms gripping our region, I was thinking about all the idiots out there that really don't know how to winter drive. Just this morning on I90 after all the snow and low teens temperatures; two people whizzed by me and ended up off the road a little further down. All I could think to myself was "wow was it really worth it". Here are some helpful tips when winter driving
    1. SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN! SLOW DOWN!- the main cause for losing control on the roadways is speed. Go to fast lose control and have a harder time regaining control. If you are in a rear wheel spin steer into the spin, don't step on the brakes and slowly accelerate.
    2. Anti-Lock Brakes - in a slide or spin apply constant moderate pressure even when the pedal is coming back at you.
    3. 4 wheel drive does not give you the power to stop it only assists you in getting started.
We are in for this stuff for at least another 3 months, I hope people really stop and think about winter driving because I know i have 3 small children and i do what i can to protect them but when someone else is careless like the two idiots driving past me this morning are careless and run into me and hurt my family that is plain irresponsible.

  7. An update on the oil spill from CNN:

If the government does not take drastic steps, another deepwater oil spill like the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico could devastate the coastal areas of the United States, an oversight commission warned Tuesday in a long-awaited report to the president.

Since the spill, there have already been reforms and new rules requiring companies to strengthen safety practices and modernize equipment

  8. Thanks to unusual weather patterns, there's snow on the ground in 49 out of 50 US states, including Hawaii. The only state that isn't at least partially a winter wonderland today is Florida, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). There is definately a change in the climate. The last time there was snow in all 50 states was Feb, 2010 and before that was in the 70's. Research hasn't turned up any long-term changes in winter-snow cover in the United States over the last 40 years. But spring-snow cover is decreasing. I believe we need to wake up and pay attention to what is going on in the environment.

  9. Another area has been the victim of drop dead birds. First birds are found dead in Arkansas, second dead fish and now dead birds in Missouri. No one knows what is going on? Yea right someone has to know something this just doesn't make sense. Global warming? Well there are many speculations as to why this is happening but to me it just doesn’t seem right. I don’t believe that the birds on New Year ’s Eve died of shock. Come on; give us more credit than that. We have all this new aged technology and we can’t figure out why massive amounts of birds and fish are dying. Am I the only person that is interested in the cause of death in these animals?

  10. To Kristens post. I found myself interested in your story so I reasearched a few sites about the story. On two the advocate.com they said that the Beebe Ark. birds had died from injuries that formed caused blood-clots leading to their deaths. They also reported that it could have been from diseise, starvation and cold-fronts, which would cause them to be unable to keep their body temp up. National Geographics.com Claims it is a normal occurance and that fireworks was the cause. Poo-pooing that is a major problem. I found many stories on this and your right, something is strange about this it seems to now be happening all over the globe. could this be Global warming or a new diseise that humans could contact like the swine-flu.

  11. Massachusetts lifted its state of emergency on Thursday as New England dug out from under deep snow following a winter storm that blasted the region with high winds and chilly temperatures.

The storm blanketed eastern New York and western New England with anywhere from 8 inches to unofficial reports of 38 inches of snow in Berkshire County in Massachusetts, said meteorologist Brian Frugis with the National Weather Service in Albany, New York.

38 inches of snow? That's insane! And the worst part is that Massachusetts is used to the snow. So for them to call for a state of emergency it must have been pretty scary.

(And to all the football fans, I wonder if the New England/Jets game is gonna be a white-out. That'd be awesome.)

  12. The catastrophic weather events taking place across the globe (while the United States was hit with heavy snowfall, Brazil & Australia were flooded) have two likely explanations.
According to Tony Barnston (lead forecaster at Colombia University) two phenomena - La Niña and the North Atlantic Oscillation are likely responsible for the patterns we're seeing.
In the United States, La Niña usually means warmer temperatures, but this year the North Atlantic Oscillation is trumping La Niña. Since November, we have been in the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation, Barston said. This means temperatures are rising in places like northeast Canada, Greenland and Iceland, but dropping in the eastern U.S. Weather experts call it a see-saw pattern.
I'm glad there's an explanation to all this crazy weather!

  13. The recent crazy winter weather has all of us thinking about the phenomenon global warming. I think that perhaps a more accurate term would be climate change. Historically (yes, I am taking an ancient history class and yes, it is very interesting)climate change is not a modern phenomenon. Climate change has occurred multiple times in ancient history, often with dramatic consequences. I think it would be foolish to say that our actions, in particular carbon emissions, have not impacted the environment, but the world seems to be a changing and evolving planet. Static and fixed does not seem to be the way that planet Earth operates. As far as reducing our carbon emissions, electric cars seem to be the wave of the future, but there are numerous roadblocks in the way. First and foremost is the cost. The Chevrolet Volt is going to come to market with a price tag of roughly $40,000. That is kind of pricey for an unproven technology, and a modest looking vehicle. Obviously the cost will get lower after the Chevy recoups it's investment in equipment and production. However, an interesting interview that I heard on NPR a few weeks ago brought to my attention an issue that I had never previously considered. The current electric grid is barely able to handle the demand that our current use puts on it. In a country with a larger percentage of the population pulling up to a power outlet instead of a gas pump will put a big strain on the grid. One possible fix would be smart chargers that charge cars at staggered times, so there would not be widespread brown outs when the majority of the population gets hame at 5:30. Another possible solution would be smart chargers that could actually send energy back onto the grid when the vehicle hooked up to it was no longer in need of charging. It just struck me as incredible that a possible solution to a problem would pose brand new challenges to the rest of the systems that we already take for granted.

  14. To Bethany and Kristen’s post; Over 100 black birds were found dead on I 65 North, in Alabama, on January 13, 2011. A reporter from CNN called in an expert to check out the situation. A wild life scientist named Bill Gates claims that the birds were hit by a moving object like a semi-truck. He said that a group of birds may have gotten in the way of traffic and were hit. I think that it is ironic that birds are falling out of the sky, but these 100 or so were hit by oncoming traffic. I don’t think that the government tells us everything, that way there is no need for panic.
To add to Tony’s post; I saw on the news a while ago that the price of a Hybrid is not accessible to everyone. That the price is so high that is it better to get a Hybrid or a gas running car? I think that car makers like Chevy jack up the price of their fuel efficient or “cleaner” cars, because everyone want to do what is best for the economy. Most Americans have this need to get what is new and business benefit from that. Not everyone can afford a Hybrid or an Electric car. It will be a long time before the Volt will be available for most. It’s unbelievable that business like GM will charge so much on something that could help save our planet, when it was the tax payer’s money that bailed them out. The CEO of the company did not want to take a pay cut, even though the company was in trouble and a lot of people were going to lose their jobs. Now they are able to build cars that are green friendly, probably at the same cost as a gas car, the problem is that most people cannot afford.

  15. Hello everyone, As I am sure much of you already noticed or heard about the weather conditions that the united states has face this last week or so. I can saw that I was glued to the television set watching the events unfold. I did however listen to the radio, stations such as NPR and JET 1440. I do not know if anyone caught this but there was snow on the ground in almost every state in the United States except for Tampa Florida. People wined and as flights were cancelled and rightfully so. But what was interesting to me is that for once they all found out what we go through every winter! Also like many of you said road conditions through out the states is terrible so please drive safe and pray for the lives lost in Arizona.

  16. We have a lot of weather junkies:) Which is "cool"-ha, ha. I wanted to follow up on Deneen's dead bird post--I heard that the tests on a bunch of the birds determined alcohol poisoning?? Did anyone else hear this? I guess they ate a bunch fermenting grapes or something? Should we believe the news?

  17. In class I had mentioned how at my work we have to track all the food we throw away and why we had to get rid of it whether it's from someone dropping something on the floor, a customer changed their mind, the patient could be allergic or it's cold, but after we track it we just get rid of it but if you think about how much one place of employment throws away food or drinks it is truly sad because their are a lot of people who don't have enough food to get through the day yet we waste that much more.( I work at St.Vincent Hospital) At my job I am a cook and I see how much food we waste and I often think to myself why can't we give that to the homeless or with some foods put it back in the ground to fertalize it ?

  18. There are so many comments about the weather! I don't even want to talk about that subject anymore, I hate the winter! I do find it fascinating that all the states except for Florida had snow. My family, that live in states that won't get snow call and tell the family how funny it is to see people trying to drive in it. In regards to the story of the birds, I think it's real crazy. I keep hearing different stories from many people. In regards to Mrs. Nelson's question I don't believe the news. They only tell you want they know will get them high ratings. I believe that the death of the birds has to do with global warming. But I don't agree with the people, some joking and some not, about this being the beginning of the destruction of the world. Then in regards to lilangel1245 I also think about how we waste food all the time. I wish that restaurants and other food establishments could donate there food instead of always wasting it. My mother worked at KFC and every night would bring so much food home but also would tell me about how much all day long that they would throw out. I have found out though that donation places and shelters won't take already made food like that because they are afraid of it being bad.

  19. In the first two weeks of this year, there had been two mayors in two Mexican states were assassinated. On Thursday morning, the third mayor was killed after being shot at least four times. However, there were still no suspects in his murder. Looking back in 2010, the most violent year in the country's four-year war on organized crime, 14 mayors were killed across the country. This seem to be an ongoing issue that the government should do something otherwise it will get worse.

  20. The start of the new year brought great joy and fun but also an unusual disaster that has scientist baffled. On January 5 in Maryland millions of dead fish surfaced in the Chesapeake Bay as well as thousands of dead birds in Kentucky and Texas. The direct cause of these strange is still unknown while there have been many unusual hypothesis no one is certain as to how or why there have been so many deaths all around the same time.

  21. North America is rich of different resources, climtes, cultures, agriculture, and geographical features that get taken advantage of. The nothern part of the country is cooler and the south much warmer however the weather is changing dramatically over a period of years making the global warming issue seem more real. The weather seems like it is changing making the south much cooler and the north milder then usual and people are starting to take it more serious. It is a issue that humans created and a issue that humans have to take care of themselves. In large cities in the U.S. pollution is a huge problem. People take advantage of natural resources and misuse them contributing to the pollution. There are a number of ways to help eliminate the issue- Go Green!!!! Use less natural resources, plant more trees ext. It is up to richer, more educated countries like ourselves to tackle the issue at hand and make the world a heathier place to live.
